Why William Shatner Is Unhappy With Kirk’s Death In Star Trek Generations
Shatner “didn’t quite get” what he wanted in his performance
William Shatner wanted Captain Kirk to die in Star Trek Generations the way the intrepid space hero lived – with curiosity. In an interview with Screen Rant, Mr. Shatner explained that he “didn’t quite get” the nuance he was aiming for with Kirk’s last words, “Oh my!”:
I never quite hit it. I never quite got that nuance that I was looking for. I had another couple of takes, but they they didn’t understand what I was doing.
In William Shatner’s mind, Captain Kirk would have met the great unknown of death with the same awe and wonder that he faced the countless new life forms and new civilizations he encountered as Captain of the Enterprise. Shatner feels the take of “Oh my!” that is in Star Trek Generations is more fearful than he would have liked. Star Trek never resurrected William Shatner’s Captain Kirk, but at least the 93-year-old screen legend got to have one more shot at performing Kirk’s death on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Star Trek Generations is available to stream on Max.
