Andor star Diego Luna has joined the cast of Kiss of the Spider Woman. The upcoming movie is a remake of the 1985 Argentinian movie of the same name, which was based on the 1976 Manuel Puig novel and followed two very different prisoners learning about one another while trapped in a prison cell. The new movie will be a big screen mounting of the 1992 stage musical adaptation starring Jennifer Lopez as Aurora, an imaginary personality that is taken on by imprisoned LGBTQ+ hairdresser Luis Molina while daydreaming during a long prison sentence.


Per Deadline, Diego Luna and Tonatiuh have joined the cast of the Kiss of the Spider Woman remake. Tonatiuh will be playing Luis (the character played in the original movie by William Hurt, who won a Best Actor Oscar for the role), who is serving an eight-year sentence in a Brazilian prison in 1981. Luna will be playing Valentin Arregui (the character played in the original movie by Raul Julia), his new Marxist cellmate with whom Luis slowly develops a bond.

Although Tonatiuh is less of a known quantity than Luna, both stars have a wide array of experience that they are bringing to Kiss of the Spider Woman. Tonatiuh is likely best known for playing the supporting character Marcos in 11 episodes of the Los Angeles-set Starz drama Vida. However, they have also held roles in various projects on both the big and small screens, including Jane the Virgin, Stargate Origins, Chicago Med, Hidden Canyons, Angelyne, and The Loud House.


Tonatiuh can also be seen in the upcoming Netflix thriller
Carry On
, in which they star opposite Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton.

Luna has had a longer onscreen career, having broken out thanks to his starring role in the 2001 Alfonso Cuarón movie Y tu mamá también. In addition to playing the title role in the Andor cast, reprising the character he originated in the 2016 movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Luna’s most prominent roles include Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo in Narcos: Mexico and Alex in Frida. He has some musical experience as well, having voiced a character in the 2014 animated movie The Book of Life.

Both stars are playing important roles in Kiss of the Spider Woman, grounding the story outside of the spectacular fantasy sequences starring Lopez as Aurora. Their chemistry will likely be one of the most important things in making the movie a success. While it remains to be seen if they succeed, they both have experience playing a wide range of characters that should allow them to access every layer of the story being told in the musical.
