Summary

  • Alex Garland’s
    Civil War
    has surpassed
    Talk to Me
at the box office, nearing $100 million worldwide.
  • This milestone makes it A24’s second highest-grossing movie ever.
  • It remains to be seen if the movie can outgross the No. 1 title,
    Everything Everywhere All At Once
    .

Civil War has surpassed the horror movie Talk to Me to achieve an A24 milestone. The movie, which was written and directed by Annihilation and Ex Machina‘s Alex Garland, is the most expensive title ever released by the independent entertainment company, which is known for producing and distributing titles including Moonlight, Uncut Gems, Hereditary, and more. The dystopian thriller, which comes with a $50 million price tag, stars Kirsten Dunst as a journalist attempting to document the brewing civil war in a near-future America.

Per Variety, the Civil War box office is approaching the all-important $100 million milestone at the worldwide box office. While it has not quite reached that benchmark yet, before the end of its fourth weekend it has already outgrossed the A24 horror movie Talk to Me, which earned $92.1 million worldwide. This means that the Garland outing is now the second highest-grossing A24 movie of all time, behind the 2022 Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All At Once.

While the Civil War release has swiftly climbed up the all-time A24 chart, it still has a way to go before it becomes their No. 1 movie. At the time of writing, Everything Everywhere All At Once is the only obstacle in its path. However, between its original release and a 2023 re-release that added $4 million during awards season, the sci-fi comedy action movie has earned $143.4 million worldwide. This leaves a gap of more than $44 million between the Alex Garland movie and the top slot.

In addition to winning Best Picture,
Everything Everywhere All At Once
won six more Oscars, including trophies for stars Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis.

While the movie has received an unusually wide release for an A24 title and strong Civil War reviews have given it a Certified Fresh 83% Rotten Tomatoes score, it may not be able to surpass that benchmark. Like any movie, after four weekends it is experiencing diminishing returns. As upcoming summer movie season blockbuster titles including Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga are set to provide major theatrical competition, it will take strong audience hold for the movie to hit No. 1, though it’s still within the realm of possibility.

However, even if Civil War becomes the No. 1 movie, it won’t be A24’s most profitable title. Everything Everywhere All At Once achieved its gross against a much smaller budget that is estimated to be somewhere between $14.3 and $25 million. Because it cost, at most, half of what the Garland movie cost, its break-even point was much lower. The new movie will likely need to earn $100 million just to end up in the black. While it seems certain to do that, this record is undercut somewhat by its hefty price tag.
