The Fall Guy celebrates the stunt community, featuring impressive action sequences set in Australia. However, filming on-location proved to sometimes be difficult due to the continent’s infamous inclement weather.

During a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gosling reflects on the day a monsoon hit the Fall Guy set, and how he had to save Blunt from drowning. Blunt, who had been in her dressing room meditating, completely missed the memo that the set was flooding. Check out the story below:

RYAN GOSLING:
The day that Emily was too chill!

EMILY BLUNT:
Yeah, this story’s ridiculous. To be fair to Ryan, I had not realized that there was a monsoon that had hit base camp. I was having a quiet little 22-minute meditation to myself, at which point my door blew open. It was like a hurricane was going on, and Ryan was like
Last of the Mohicans:
“You need to leave!” I was meditating, and now he thinks I meditate too much.

GOSLING:
I thought you were too chill. This is a problem! You’re too zen, wading out in this knee-deep water.

BLUNT:
The trailers were floating away. I mean, I was surprised that my driver, Scott, had not come and knocked on the door saying, “We should go.” Scott was just listening to Spotify.

GOSLING:
I think he got washed away. I just saw his hands above the surface.

BLUNT:
All I remember from that day is Aaron Taylor-Johnson taking off most of his clothes and running around basecamp in the water. He was still very much in character. Just a regular, run-of-the-mill day on set in Australia. We went to Australia for the weather, and that’s what we ended up with.

The scary yet hilarious story reflects just how well Gosling and Blunt work together. Their off-screen friendship and back-and-forth banter helped in creating some viral moments during The Fall Guy promotional tour, such as their appearance at the 2024 Oscars. It transferred to the big screen too, as the pair have great chemistry and comedic timing in the film. Gosling, who embraces his character’s comedic personality, works tremendously with Blunt’s more serious Jody.

The Fall Guy has so far received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, with a Certified Fresh score of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the action-comedy opened below expectations at the box office, making only $28.5 million. It was expected to debut with $30 million against an estimated budget of $150 million. While it did not measure up in terms of box office performance, it is still one of the biggest opening weekends ever for a Gosling film and stands among one of the most well-received movies currently playing in theaters.

falls behind only Gosling’s

Despite its initial underperformance at the box office, there is still hope left for The Fall Guy to take off and become a sleeper hit. Beyond the possibility of positive word of mouth, the easy camaraderie between Gosling and Blunt could pique viewer interest as they continue to promote the movie. While the bulk of their marketing might be over now, viral clips can keep circulating, and when coupled with positive audience scores, this could help increase interest in The Fall Guy. With the summer movie season only just kicking off, anything can happen.
