Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire makes its VOD debut after its theatrical run. Director Gil Kenan’s new installment in the decades-spanning franchise picks up after the Ghostbusters: Afterlife ending, following the Spengler family as they face a new enemy in New York City who threatens to begin a new ice age. Despite featuring the return of original stars like Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson alongside newcomers like Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, and Mckenna Grace, the film hasn’t been a big hit.

Now, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is available to watch at home on most major VOD platforms, including Vudu, Google Play, Apple TV, Prime Video, and more. The film costs $19.99 for a 48-hour rental or $24.99 to purchase the title outright. There’s no word yet on when the new sequel will be coming to streaming.

Will Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Find More Success On VOD?

The Afterlife Sequel Find Hasn’t Been A Hit

After the poor reception to the 2016 reboot, it was unclear what would become of the Ghostbusters franchise. In 2021, however, Ghostbusters: Afterlife achieved critical and commercial success, reinvigorating love for the movie series by taking the legacy sequel approach. Unfortunately, Kenan’s new film was not able to replicate this success.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire reviews were mixed at best, and the film currently holds a lackluster 43% on Rotten Tomatoes. While the new movie banks yet again on nostalgia like its predecessor, critics mostly agree that it fails to balance its cumbersome roster of characters, and its tone is overly dark. This is reflected in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘s box office performance, with the film having earned only $195.2 million worldwide. While this is only about $9 million short of Afterlife‘s box office, that film was made on a $75 million budget, while this one carries a $100 million budget.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘s Rotten Tomatoes audience score is 83%, suggesting general movie-goers found it much more enjoyable. The movie playing better with casual viewers could ultimately help it find more success on PVOD, and more success still when it becomes available on a streaming service. Unfortunately, however, success in these areas can be harder to quantify, so it’s currently not looking likely that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will get a direct sequel, at least not one at the same budget level.
