A new behind-the-scenes video reveals that Downton Abbey 3 is officially in production. Originally a TV show, Downton Abbey is one of the most popular costume dramas of all time. It has thus far spawned two movies, including Downton Abbey in 2019 and Downton Abbey: A New Era in 2022. Since then, Downton Abbey 3 has been announced.

Now, a new behind-the-scenes video from the Downton Abbey Twitter account confirms that Downton Abbey 3 is in production. The video begins with a shot of what appears to be a table read. Actors’ name cards read “Hugh Bonneville ROBERT” and “Michelle Dockery LADY MARY.” The scene then cuts to an image of the main Downton Abbey cast reunited for the film.


Dockery then announces that the Downton Abbey crew is in production on “the third Downton Abbey movie.” The caption for the post reads “Focus Features and Carnival Films are thrilled to announce the third film in the beloved Downton Abbey franchise.

The brief video reveals some of the main Downton Abbey cast members as they reunite. Actors reprising their roles include Dockery and Bonneville along with Elizabeth McGovern, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Penelope Wilton, Lesley Nicol, Michael Fox, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sophie McShera, and Douglas Reith. Paul Giamatti has also recently been announced to be returning to his role as Harold Levinson, brother to McGovern’s Cora Grantham.

Also returning to the Downton Abbey crew is Simon Curtis. Curtis will be directing Downton Abbey 3 after he previously directed Downton Abbey: A New Era. This Abbey film received an 87% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an even more positive 97% audience score. Given this immensely positive reception for Downton Abbey 2, it is likely a great thing for Downton Abbey 3 that Curtis is returning, alongside so many of the series’ most beloved stars.

In addition to returning a number of the cast and behind-the-scenes members, Downton Abbey 3 will also be including new characters. Said new characters will be played by Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan. The exact identity of the characters that these newcomers will be playing is as of yet unknown, much like the plot of Downton Abbey 3. As the film begins production, however, more details about Downton Abbey3 will likely begin to evolve shortly.
