Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has an official theatrical release date. The original 2023 movie, which followed Mike (Josh Hutcherson) getting a job as a security guard at a closed-down family restaurant filled with haunted animatronics, was based on the video game series of the same name created by Scott Cawthon. The movie was a smash hit, grossing $297.2 million against a $20 million budget despite a day-and-date Peacock release and a steep 76.2% drop in its second weekend. In the wake of this success, the sequel Five Nights at Freddys 2 was confirmed to be greenlit in early 2024.

Universal Pictures has now announced the official release date for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. The anticipated horror sequel is currently slated to come to theaters on December 5, 2025. This date comes just three weekends before Christmas, which will likely be dominated by the planned releases of the upcoming franchise blockbusters The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants and Avatar 3.

Is The Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 Release Date Secretly Genius?

A Christmas Release Could Make The Blumhouse Horror Sequel A Hit

Because the Five Nights at Freddy’s box office hit such a titanic gross during a Halloweentime release that kicked off on October 27, it might come as a surprise that the sequel is timing its release around an entirely different holiday. This could indicate that the new movie, which is already a subversive take on iconic childhood pleasures, will be set around Christmas. However, it may be unrelated to the content of the sequel and could simply be a strategic business move for several important reasons.

The first reason could be the severe week 2 drop that occurred despite the Five Nights at Freddy’s cast featuring quite a few familiar faces. In addition to the deleterious effect of its day-and-date streaming release and the horror genre’s generally steep drops, the fact that the second weekend took place after Halloween may have resulted in a decreased general interest in horror-themed releases. Coming out further from Halloween may reduce associations with the horror-tinged holiday.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will also be providing counter-programming for a variety of family movies that will likely come out during the Christmas season, which could increase its notoriety. This has previously provided a boost for other horror and thriller December releases that had nothing to do with subverting childhood themes, including the original Scream and Netflix’s Bird Box. It remains to be seen if the movie performs as well as the original, but this release date could end up making a huge difference.
