Mamma Mia! 3 has received an optimistic update from star Meryl Streep. Streep played the role of single mother Donna Sheridan in the 2008 movie adaptation of the hit stage musical, which used the ABBA songbook to tell the story of a young woman who invites three possible fathers to her wedding. Ten years after its release, the cast – including Streep – reunited for a sequel, subtitled Here We Go Again. While the possible Mamma Mia! 3 was announced to be in development as of 2020, subsequent updates on the sequel have left its fate unclear.

Per Deadline, Meryl Streep spoke about the sequel while attending the Cannes Film Festival, where she was given an Honorary Palme d’Or. Streep revealed that a meeting about Mamma Mia! 3 is “imminent,” though she has no idea what the storyline that will be pitched is going to be, considering the fact that Donna is dead in the sequel and had to appear as a ghost. Additionally, she shared that “of course I want to do it,” expressing her enthusiasm for the franchise even though the movie’s prospects remain uncertain. Read her full quote below:

[A meeting is] imminent. I don’t know how they’re going to do it. They have an idea. I haven’t heard it yet but it’s in [my diary] and I’m going to hear about it pretty soon. Of course I want to do it. I think folks love it.

There Is Plenty Of Material For Mamma Mia! 3 (Even With Donna Dead)

More ABBA Songs And Storylines Can Be Explored In Mamma Mia! 3

With Streep hinting that talks about Mamma Mia! 3 is still going on, in addition to previous teases from other cast members, it seems possible that the movie could still be moving forward in some way, shape, or form. While Donna is dead in the current timeline of the movie, this doesn’t necessarily prevent Streep from appearing as part of the main cast. While she could appear as a ghost for a second time, the storyline of Here We Go Again already introduced the perfect way to bring her back.

Mamma Mia 3? What Every Actor Has Said About Returning

Mamma Mia 3 is trapped in development hell, but most of the main cast is still up to return for another musical adventure. Here’s what they have said.

The 2018 sequel introduced parallel storylines following young Donna (Lily James) exploring Europe while her daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) grapples with becoming a mother in the present day. If the sequel continues both timelines, Streep could eventually replace James onscreen, even though her scenes would still chronologically take place before the events of the movie’s main timeline. In addition to having ample opportunities for Donna’s return, the music has further avenues to go down. While the Mamma Mia! soundtrack has brought quite a few different ABBA songs to the screen, there are many more for the new sequel to explore.

In addition to featuring additional ABBA songs such as “Why Did It Have to Be Me?” and “Angel Eyes,”
Here We Go Again
incorporated reprises of original
Mamma Mia!
songs including “Dancing Queen” and “Mamma Mia!”

In addition to showcasing unused ABBA tracks including “Ring Ring” and “Under Attack” (which was used in the original musical but never made it to screen), Mamma Mia! 3 could use music from the ABBA reunion album Voyage, which was released in 2021, years after Here We Go Again premiered. The iconic band’s catalog has much more left to plumb, as does Donna’s storyline, either during Sophie’s childhood or in the years before Donna’s death. With so many avenues to explore, Streep’s update highlights just how close the sequel is to becoming a reality.
