‘ commercial prospects have been in question following divisive early screenings, but an IMAX release is a positive development for the film.

Megalopolis will be getting a “global” IMAX release, a new update confirms. Directed and self-funded by Francis Ford Coppola, the modern day epic has had a rocky road to completion. The film, which stars Adam Driver as an architect attempting to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating cataclysm, has been the subject of troubling behind-the-scenes reports and, more recently, some divisive test screenings. Megalopolis‘ theatrical release has long been something of a question mark, but the film just recently secured releases in some international territories.

Megalopolis now gets a promising new update, with IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond telling journalists at Cannes (via THR) that the film will get a “global” IMAX release. A date for the IMAX release won’t come until the film secures domestic distribution. Check out Gelfond’s comment about the decision below:

“The film is going to get an Imax release. One of the things that we pride ourselves on is being filmmaker-friendly. So we’ve committed to Francis to do a global Imax release.”

Francis Ford Coppola’s Epic Faces An Uphill Battle

In addition to reports of behind-the-scenes turmoil on the Megalopolis set, the film’s early screenings to secure distrubution did not go well. While the reactions to the movie varied and weren’t all negative, there were concerns from distributors about the movie’s commercial prospects due to how idiosyncratic it was in its storytelling and filmmaking. Journalist Matthew Belloni revealed in his Puck newsletter that one attendee described Megalopolis as “unflinching in how batsh*t it is”.

What Megalopolis Is Actually About: Francis Ford Coppola’s New Movie Explained

The trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited passion project has finally been revealed, raising many questions about the film’s epic plot.

Suffice it to say that big distributors like Warner Bros and Universal didn’t bite. Megalopolis did find luck with smaller distributors, however, and now has releases planned in countries like France, Germany, and Italy, among others. The film still needs to secure a release in the U.S. and Canada, but the fact that it’s now getting an IMAX run means Gelfond evidently doesn’t agree that the film lacks commercial potential.

Megalopolis faces an uphill battle at the box office, but IMAX has been a major draw for audiences for recent movies like Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two. Though the film has gotten some bad press, it’s such a wild swing from Coppola that it could end up becoming something of an event, with audiences heading to theaters to experience what, by most accounts, is a bold and non-traditional film. It remains to be seen what becomes of Megalopolis, but the IMAX release is a major step forward.
