The Black Phone 2‘s release date is delayed by four months as Universal Pictures updates its 2025 release schedule. The upcoming film serves as a sequel to the surprise 2022 horror hit The Black Phone. Based on the short story of the same name by Joe Hill, the original movie follows Finney (Mason Thames), a boy kidnapped by a serial killer known as The Grabber (Ethan Hawke). Finney receives aid via a black phone, which allows him to communicate with The Grabber’s deceased victims. Its success eventually led to Universal greenlighting The Black Phone 2.
Universal Pictures recently announced that Blumhouse’s The Black Phone 2 has delayed its release date. It is not a significant delay, as instead of releasing on June 27, 2025, the film will now premiere on October 17, 2025. The four-month delay means it will now take the release slot initially allotted to an Untitled Blumhouse Event Film. Universal Pictures did not provide a reason for the change.

The Black Phone 2 Isn’t The Only Delayed Blumhouse Sequel
The Black Phone 2 isn’t the only Blumhouse movie facing delays. The sequel to the highly popular M3GAN also experienced a slight change. Instead of releasing on May 16, 2025, M3GAN 2.0 will now take The Black Phone 2‘s original slot on June 27, 2025. Although it is just a one-month delay, this is actually the second time the Blumhouse film has been delayed. Initially, M3GAN 2.0 was set for release in January 2025 before being pushed to May 16 and now June 27. Although Universal Pictures didn’t provide a reason for either delay, there are several possible reasons.
M3GAN 2.0′s initial delay is understandable as January is often considered a “dump month” due to being less profitable than other months. Meanwhile, the latest delay means it won’t be competing with the major MCU movie release in May 2025: Thunderbolts*. As for The Black Phone 2, it’s possible it was moved simply to make space for M3GAN‘s sequel or to put its release closer to Halloween. Another explanation is that both Blumhouse sequels were given tentative dates, which shifted as Universal got a better picture of its 2025 lineup.
In addition to pushing back The Black Phone 2 and M3GAN 2.0, Universal set three release dates, including another highly anticipated Blumhouse sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, which will arrive on December 5, 2025. The studio also set release dates for Drop and Woman in the Yard. Given that multiple dates were announced or pushed back, and the delays weren’t drastic, scheduling technicalities rather than production issues likely caused the adjustments. Although The Black Phone 2 has been pushed back a few months, it doesn’t seem anything else about its current status has changed significantly.
