Summary

  • Director Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie is gaining momentum with writer Jonathan Tropper joining the project.
  • While Levy’s movie lacks concrete details, the collaboration with Tropper hints at quality sci-fi and character-driven potential.
  • Levy and Tropper’s past work suggests they can tackle any type of story in the Star Wars universe, so there’s no telling what it could be about.

Director Shawn Levy confirmed he would be working on a Star Wars long ago, and his project has finally picked up development steam by hiring the writer of The Adam Project. There are several new Star Wars movies in the works, but Shawn Levy’s seemed to have been put on the back burner. Other Star Wars movies, like The Mandalorian & Grogu and New Jedi Order have taken priority, both in terms of information Lucasfilm is willing to share and in their respective release dates.

There has, however, been a major development for Levy’s Star Wars movie. Jeff Sneider, an entertainment industry reporter, revealed that screenwriter Jonathan Tropper had signed on to Levy’s project (via Star Wars News Net). Tropper is a fairly prolific writer, as he’s penned the scripts for movies like The Adam Project and This is Where I Leave You, and he’s also worked on shows like Banshee and Warrior. Having Tropper work as a writer is a very big development for Levy’s Star Wars movie, and it’s one of the project’s first concrete steps forward in the development process in years.

There’s No Solid Information About Shawn Levy’s Movie Yet

While hiring a writer is an extremely promising sign, there is still very little concrete information about Levy’s Star Wars film. Many of the other upcoming Star Wars films have revealed their focus or a working title, but no such details exist for Levy’s movie. The lack of information is most likely a result of Levy’s busy schedule: he’s been actively making Deadpool & Wolverine for years now, and Levy said his Star Wars movie was in a “holding pattern” because of it. Deadpool & Wolverine is set to release on July 26, though, which could be a sign that more developments are imminent.

Deadpool & Wolverine

A follow-up to the highly successful Deadpool and Deadpool 2 films starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. The third film will be the first in the franchise to be developed under the Marvel Studios banner following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

Release Date

It’s possible that more information will soon be revealed about Levy’s Star Wars movie, but for now, there’s very little to go on. The only clues that could hint at what his foray into the galaxy far, far away could entail are Levy’s and Tropper’s previous projects. The two have worked together in the past, on both The Adam Project and This is Where I Leave You. The Adam Project proved that Levy and Tropper are more than competent at showing sci-fi action, and This is Where I Leave You showed that they could also focus on intimate, character-driven dramas.

Levy and Tropper’s past work is a great sign for their Star Wars movie’s quality, but it unfortunately doesn’t give a great idea of what their movie could be about. Levy and Tropper have worked in all areas of fiction in the past, which means they could tackle any type of story Star Wars wants them to tell, from any moment in the Star Wars timeline. The franchise is also branching out from the Skywalker saga, which means it will feature even more varied stories in the future. It seems only an official announcement will be able to reveal more about Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie.
