Shirley is the latest Rotten Tomatoes success for Regina King. Directed by John Ridley, the movie follows trailblazer Shirley Chisolm (Regina King) through the true story of her race to become both the first Black and the first female United States President in 1972. Shirley debuted on Netflix on March 22 after a small-scale theatrical run and has an all-star cast, including King, the late Lance Reddick, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Terrence Howard, and more leading actors. King previously won an Oscar for her role as Sharon Rivers in If Beale Street Could Talk.

Critics have praised Shirley on Rotten Tomatoes, where it has secured a 70 percent Tomatometer score and an 80 percent audience score. It marks the fourth fresh movie in a row for King after the success of The Harder They Fall, One Night in Miami, and If Beale Street Could Talk. King has not appeared in a rotten movie since Planes: Fire & Rescue in 2014. It is an impressive streak which has only been extended by her latest movie.

Regina King’s Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Streak

Shirley is only the latest movie from Regina King that has earned positive regard from viewers. Despite its success, it is actually one of the lesser-rated movies in her recent filmography. The Harder They Fall, released in 2021, boasts an 88 percent Tomatometer score, while her If Beale Street Could Talk and One Night in Miami both earned 95 percent or more. All three have been Certified Fresh.

Even setting aside movies, King’s impressive streak extends to the TV landscape as well. In 2019, King starred in Watchmen, which has a 96 percent Tomatometer score. Audiences were less favorable with a 57 percent score, but the critical response is still exceptional.
