Dune: Part Two has broken a huge domestic box office record for star Timothée Chalamet. The movie adapts the second half of the eponymous Frank Herbert sci-fi novel, featuring Chalamet reprising his 2021 role as Paul Atreides. The opening weekend of the smash hit, which also stars Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and Rebecca Ferguson, raked in $82 million on the domestic front, and the movie quickly rose past $500 million worldwide to become the highest-grossing movie of 2024 so far.

Per Deadline, the Dune: Part Two box office took in an additional $4.5 million at the domestic box office on Friday. This brought its cumulative domestic total to roughly $220 million, meaning that it has surpassed the domestic gross of Chalamet’s 2023 hit Wonka, which earned $218 million. This means it is now the star’s highest-grossing domestic movie ever, as Wonka had previously beaten 2014’s Interstellar, which had a domestic gross of $188 million.

This domestic result for the Dune: Part Two release is a considerable success for the actor. Although Chalamet has now appeared in five movies that grossed over $100 million at the domestic box office, the star first rose to fame in smaller critical successes that weren’t huge blockbusters, including Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird, so this represents a tremendous shift in his prospects. However, his new movie still has a way to go if it is going to become his highest-grossing movie worldwide. Below, see where it ranks among his current top 5:

Title

Domestic Box Office

Worldwide Box Office

Interstellar (2014)

$188 million

$681 million

Wonka (2023)

$218.2 million

$629.7 million

Dune: Part Two (2024)

$220.3 million

$520 million+

Dune (2021)

$108.9 million

$433.9 million

Little Women (2019)

$108.1 million

$218.8 million

The international grosses for the fourth weekend of Dune: Part Two have not yet been fully calculated. Nevertheless, it is highly unlikely that it will have outgrossed Wonka by the end of Sunday. It likely also has to earn more than $100 million after this weekend in order to surpass Interstellar and become No. 1 worldwide. However, on the domestic front, it is tracking ahead of the cumulative totals of the fourth weekends of both Wonka ($164.3 million) and Interstellar ($147 million), so it seems highly likely that it can accomplish this goal by the end of its run.

Being part of the Dune: Part Two cast may well be on its way to providing Chalamet with his latest record-shattering hit on an even broader scale than his current achievement. However, it may not remain the star’s highest-grossing movie for long. If he returns in the probable third movie in the franchise, adapting the 1969 novel Dune Messiah, he could potentially push his blockbuster prospects even further.
