The Ghostbusters Netflix animated show gets an update from Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the follow-up to the 2021 film Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which combines a cast of new and old Ghostbusters characters. The new films have been building out the universe of the original 1980s movies, much like the accompanying cartoon The Real Ghostbusters did when it aired from 1986-1991, and its later sequel series, Extreme Ghostbusters, in 1997.

is currently in theaters worldwide.

Speaking on A Trip to the Movies with Alex Zane, Kenan discussed the development of a new Ghostbusters animated show at Netflix. According to Kenan, he “just watched an entire art presentation for the show.”

The director claimed that work is being done on the show currently, including scripts and key art. He did not reveal many details about the show, but said that “it’s a great time to be a Ghostbuster.” Check out the full quote from Kenan below:

I just watched an entire art presentation for the show. I’ve seen the sets and the environments, and I just saw my first glimpse at a world of supernatural characters as realized by our brilliant creative team. All I can say is the work is being done as we speak. It’s in what we call full development. Scripts are being written, art is being created, and it’s a great time to be a Ghostbuster.

How Will Netflix’s Ghostbusters Fare After Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire?

Netflix’s Ghostbusters animated series was first announced back in June of 2022. In the almost two years since its development, little has been announced as to the status of the series. Kenan’s quote, however, seems to confirm that the Ghostbusters Netflix series is definitely still in development.

The 21st century era has been mixed for Ghostbusters thus far. 2016’s all-female Ghostbusters remake was widely-panned by critics and audiences. This year’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has come in even lower among critics, getting a 43% on Rotten Tomatoes. Moviegoers like Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire slightly better, coming in at an 85% audience approval rating.

While the Ghostbusters Netflix show will likely follow different characters, the low ratings for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire are not a great sign for the series. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire had a box office opening of $61 million worldwide, which is a respectable start to what will hopefully be a successful run for the film. In order for Netflix’s Ghostbusters to do well, Frozen Empire must show that it can overcome negative reviews and be a relatively decent box office success for the Ghostbusters IP.
