Would Harry Potter Work As An Anime?

Why The Wizarding World Franchise Could Make The Jump To Animation

Michael Gambon as Dumbledore fights Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

So far, the adventures in the Wizarding World have taken place almost exclusively in live-action. The closest the franchise has gotten to animation thus far is a brief sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, when Hermione recounts the legend of the Resurrection Stone, the Elder Wand, and the Cloak of Invisibility (together, the titular Deathly Hallows). While the franchise hasn’t yet explored a story firmly in the realm of animation or anime, there’s reason to believe it could work.

A planned decade-spanning

Harry Potter
TV show

is currently in the works at Max, speaking to the continued interest in the franchise,

Firstly, the key themes in Harry Potter are powerful regardless of the medium in which they are presented. The story, for example, became and remains popular because it is about a child trying to find his place in the world. The movies in the Harry Potter franchise explore themes of identity, friendship, and romance, in addition to featuring Harry deal with issues that will be familiar to viewers, such as school bullies and family troubles.

What’s more, the world of Harry Potter is also a big reason for the franchise’s success. The medium of animation would allow for some interesting artistic flourishes in this regard, particularly as it relates to the use of magic. Spell casting, for example, could be depicted in a much more stylized way in animation, allowing for creative new ways to approach wizard duels. It remains to be seen whether Harry Potter will ever make the jump to animation, but it certainly seems like it could be a fun new way to explore a beloved franchise.

All eight films in the

franchise are currently available to stream on Peacock.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter is a multimedia franchise about an orphaned boy who enrolls at Hogwarts School of Wizardry, where he learns the truth about himself, his family, and the terrible evil that haunts the magical world. Adapted from the novels, Harry Potter is an eight-episode film saga that follows the journey of Harry Potter and his friends, Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley, as they navigate the tricky world of growing up, school life, and magic. Starting from year one and moving to their seventh year, the films chronicle the students’ time at Hogwarts while unfurling a sinister plot that centers around the unsuspecting Harry. With the return of the dark wizard, Voldemort, the students and professors at Hogwarts will fight to carry on as the world around them may change forever. Harry Potter has expanded beyond the world of its films and novels with several video games, a spin-off film series titled Fantastic Beasts, and even attractions at Universal Studios.
