Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan responds to reports that Aaron Taylor-Johnson is next in line to play the iconic spy. After first playing the role back in 2006, Daniel Craig bid farewell to 007 with the explosive ending of No Time To Die in 2021. Since then, it’s been unclear who will take Craig’s place, but a recent report claimed that Taylor-Johnson had been offered the role of Bond. No official announcement, however, has yet been made.
During a recent interview on RTE‘s The Ray D’Arcy Show, Brosnan shares his thoughts about Taylor-Johnson playing the character in the upcoming Bond 26. According to the former 007, Taylor-Johnson is a fine choice for the role. As for the advice he’d give the younger actor, Brosnan says: “Be bold. Go out there, have a great time. Just love it. “I think the man has the chops and the talent and the charisma to play Bond, very much so. Ironically, he was in one of the movies that I made. You mentioned Beau Marie St Clair, she was my late producing partner. We formed a company called Irish Dreamtime and made movies like The Thomas Crown Affair and Evelyn. One of the first movies we made, one of our earliest movies, was The Greatest – and he was in it. He was The Greatest in it. It’s a lovely movie with Aaron and Carey Mulligan and Susan Sarandon and myself.
“So yes, I read the news about his possibilities of being a Bond, so I would definitely tip my hat to the fellow.”

Where The Franchise Could Go After Daniel Craig
Brosnan’s Die Another Day represents arguably the silliest and most outlandish Bond movie since Roger Moore’s Moonraker, and reviews for the film were less than stellar. The franchise needed a change in direction, and it got it with Casino Royale in 2006. Highly influenced by the successful Bourne franchise, Craig’s Bond in Casino Royale was gritty and serious, featuring hard-hitting fight scenes and a more stripped back version of the character, no gadgets in sight.

While Craig’s Bond would continue to evolve over his subsequent four films, leaning more into sci-fi gadgetry and over-the-top villains, that grittiness remained present. With the Craig era now over, it’s unclear exactly where the franchise goes next. It could, for example, once again return to a dark and serious Casino Royale tone, or it could go in a new direction, perhaps returning to a lighter tone reminiscent of the Moore era.
Taylor-Johnson will evidently be crucial to the franchise’s tone moving forward. The actor has proven himself adept at handling serious action in movies like Godzilla and Tenet, but also keeping things light with movies like Bullet Train and Kick-Ass. It remains to be seen where Taylor-Johnson’s potential Bond will fall on the tone spectrum, but Brosnan evidently believes that the younger star has what it takes to be a great 007.
