Lashana Lynch’s Maria Rambeau returned to the MCU at the end of The Marvels, introducing a powerful new Captain Marvel variant who has now been imagined at full power in stunning fan art. British actor Lashana Lynch debuted as Maria Rambeau, Carol Danvers’ best friend and Monica Rambeau’s mother, in 2019’s Captain Marvel, and even though Rambeau passed away during the Blip, Lynch has portrayed a number of her multiversal variants in subsequent projects. Interestingly, Maria Rambeau’s variants are mostly alternate versions of Captain Marvel, including one in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and another in The Marvels.

In The Marvels’ post-credits scene, Lashana Lynch reappeared as the Maria Rambeau variant from the reality in which Monica Rambeau finds herself trapped. This variant is a more powerful iteration of Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel, Binary, who has no recollection of Monica. Despite sporting her red-and-white costume, Binary’s powers aren’t displayed in The Marvels, but they have been depicted in fan art shared by dariothai_american.

In Marvel Comics, Binary has the potential power of a White Hole, which is showcased in this vibrant art, and could be adapted if Lashana Lynch returns to the MCU as this powerful new hero.

The introduction of one of the MCU’s newest heroes teases a tragic fate for one of the most powerful Avengers (though there may still be hope).

When Could Lashana Lynch Return As Maria Rambeau’s Binary?

Neither Marvel Studios nor Lashana Lynch have confirmed her return to the MCU in an upcoming project, but after appearing as Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Binary in The Marvels, it’s likely Lynch will return. Maria Rambeau seems to be a key figure across the MCU’s multiverse, having appeared in several different realities, which means she could be pivotal to the plot of Phase 6’s upcoming Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars. This could see Monica Rambeau return to the MCU’s main continuity, and perhaps bring Binary with her.

Marvel Studios is developing an X-Men reboot for the MCU, but the team’s introduction could mark the end of one of the franchises strongest Avengers.

If the X-Men-inhabited universe seen in The Marvels is that of 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise, it’s also possible that Lashana Lynch could reappear as Binary as soon as 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. Marvel Studios’ only 2024 release is expected to feature cameo appearances from many X-Men members, and this could include Binary herself, who travels with the X-Men for a time in Marvel Comics. Indeed, Lashana Lynch could also make her next appearance following The Marvels as completely different variants of Maria Rambeau, perhaps continuing the pattern that has been placing Rambeau as Captain Marvel rather than Carol Danvers.
