Despite newer Warner Bros. features entering theaters and adding further competition, Dune: Part Two is holding strong and is set to surpass $250 million at the domestic box office over the weekend. Denis Villeneuve’s two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel continues, as Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides seeks vengeance against the Harkonnens. Praised by critics and audiences alike, the sequel has had a continuously strong box-office run, leading to hopes for a third movie that will adapt the events of Dune: Messiah to the big screen.

As Dune: Part Two enters its fifth weekend at the box office, Variety reports that newer releases won’t halt its performance. While fellow Legendary and Warner Bros. blockbuster Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire enters theaters, Dune: Part Two has only experienced a 23% drop from $4.4 million to $3.4 million at the box office. This leaves Villeneuve’s feature on track to earn $250 million from domestic screenings, allowing the sequel to remain 2024’s highest-performing movie of the year so far.

Villeneuve Doesn’t Want To Rush On The Development For Dune 3.

Furthermore, Villeneuve stated that he wanted to take a step back and ensure the script wasn’t rushed to capitalize on the current goodwill.

Dune: Part Two‘s global box office has already been incredibly successful compared to Villeneuve’s first chapter. The sequel outgrossed the 2021 original movie at the global box office within its third week of release, while it quickly outpaced its predecessor’s lifetime domestic box office haul of $109 million by earning $111 million by the end of its first week. While this success may make Dune: Messiah seem inevitable, Dune 3 isn’t guaranteed just yet.

Following the sequel’s release, Legendary Entertainment CEO Josh Grode commented on the chances of Dune: Part Three ever being brought to the screen. He stated that it would all rely on whether creative visions aligned and the director’s script met expectations. Furthermore, Villeneuve stated that he wanted to take a step back and ensure the script wasn’t rushed to capitalize on the current goodwill. The director hopes Dune: Messiah‘s script could conclude the trilogy and surpass its predecessor. As such, it is likely pre-production could delay the filming of the third movie.
