Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire just passed an extraordinary milestone early in its run. The latest movie in the Monsterverse, The New Empire sees Kong and Godzilla join forces once again to fight against a deadly new threat from the Hollow Earth. With the Skar King hoping to conquer the world, the King of the Monsters and the King of Skull Island are seemingly all that stand between the Great Ape and humanity’s survival.
Audiences have been flocking to see Godzilla x Kong‘s cast of Titans and Great Apes march to war. According to a report by Variety, the movie has already brought in $194 million worldwide in its opening weekend. With such a massive weekend achievement, it surpassed Dune: Part Two‘s $182.5 million first weekend take to secure the biggest opening weekend of the year so far.
Godzilla X Kong Is A Return To Form For The Monsterverse
Godzilla X Kong Is Breaking Records Everywhere
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire‘s opening weekend isn’t just impressive for 2024. Domestically, it has secured $80 million for the weekend. That total surpasses every previous Monsterverse movie, save Godzilla (2014), which launched the universe. It more than doubles Godzilla vs. Kong‘s $32 million opening weekend and far exceeds Godzilla: King of the Monsters‘ $48 million.

Budget |
Opening Weekend Box Office |
Final Box Office |
---|---|---|---|
Godzilla (2014) |

Its worldwide take is also impressive, though it again fails to surpass Godzilla‘s $196 million opening weekend. Given the circumstances, however, The New Empire is doing astonishingly well. Dune: Part Two was the first major showing in the 2024 box office, after Argylle and Madame Web disappointed, and the year has been continuing the volatile box office trends of 2023. Since the pandemic, many blockbusters have been struggling to succeed in theaters, and The New Empire has shown no hint of an impact.
Every Titan In Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire introduces a whole bunch of new Titans in the MonsterVerse, with new allies and rivals for Kong and Godzilla to face.
Godzilla vs. Kong struggled with the aftereffects of the pandemic, as it was released on March 31, 2021, but Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire represents a return to form for the franchise. Even in the face of middling reviews, the movie has reignited the Monsterverse after its previous struggles. Given that it will need approximately $400 million to achieve profitability, this strong opening is a great side for this movie and the future of the franchise. Godzilla and Kong remain major box office draws, and it has demolished Dune: Part Two‘s 2024 box office opening record.
