Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire soars past a major global box office milestone after less than one week in theaters. The second MonsterVerse film from Adam Wingard, Godzilla X Kong hit theaters this past weekend, on March 29. It continues the story from Godzilla vs. Kong and features a lead cast including Rebecca Hall, Rachel House, Dan Stevens, and Brian Tyree Henry.

As per Collider, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire has already surpassed a major global box office milestone. In only four days, Godzilla X Kong has made it past the $200 million mark at the worldwide box office. $20 million of this total was from IMAX screens alone, with an overall estimated total gross of $202 million. $87 million of this total is from domestic sales, meaning that it will almost certainly pass the $100 million mark domestically by Friday. Godzilla X Kong’s box office also made the MonsterVerse cross a $2 billion gross as a whole.

This box office milestone is huge for Godzilla X Kong, as it almost certainly ensures its box office success as it continues its theatrical run. By comparison, the opening weekend totals for its predecessor, Godzilla vs. Kong, positioned it at only $31.6 million domestically. Overall, Godzilla vs. Kong made $100.9 million domestically and $470.1 million worldwide during its 40-week theatrical run. These statistics mean that Godzilla X Kong is almost certain not only to pass Godzilla vs. Kong, but to do so domestically within its first full week in theaters.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire had some massive shoes to fill as it hit theaters this year. The film was coming right off of the tails of Godzilla Minus One, a Toho-produced, Japanese telling of the kaiju monster story that scored a 98% among both critics and audiences and earned an Oscar win for Best Visual Effects. Though the MonsterVerse is a distinct franchise from that of Godzilla Minus One, Godzilla X Kong was undoubtedly going to be ripe for comparison given the recency of the other monster film’s release.
