For the second week in a row, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is dominating the box office. The latest movie in the Monsterverse features the monstrous Skar King as he rises from Hollow Earth. With the forces of Hollow Earth coming to conquer the surface world, Kong has to convince Godzilla to stand beside him once again, or else risk the entire world suffering sheer devastation. The movie debuted to extreme financial success, having ruled the box office in its opening week.

While the Godzilla x Kong cast certainly fears its Great Apes and Titans, viewers in the real world have been coming back for more. According to a report by Deadline, the movie earned $7.5 million on Friday and is expected to earn $25-28 million in its second weekend. That represents a 65% drop, which is fairly on par for non-pandemic Monsterverse releases.

Godzilla x Kong’s Second Weekend Drop Is Excellent

Only Two Monsterverse Movies Had A Lower Drop

By combining Titans and Great Apes, the Monsterverse has become a box office giant. Its movies have drawn in over $100 million domestically, and they tend to smash through their opening weekend with over $60 million each. Godzilla vs. Kong is generally the exception to the franchise’s metrics, as it was released in March 2021, when the pandemic was still influencing the box office, leaving it to struggle in its first weekend. Unlike Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla x Kong is on track to become a box office hit. Its opening weekend take was second only to 2014’s Godzilla, which was the first Monsterverse movie. Setting aside Godzilla vs. Kong‘s tumultuous numbers, it also happens to have had the second-lowest second week percentage drop. Only Kong: Skull Island had a lower drop, as it had a 64% decline, as opposed to Godzilla x Kong‘s 65%.

The impressive showing is only made better by the quality of movies at the box office this weekend. Monkey Man, The First Omen, and Someone Like You all debuted, while Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Dune: Part Two remained relatively competitive. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is setting itself up to be one of the best box office hits in Monsterverse history, and its competition proves that its success is far from a fluke.
