Following the conclusion of Blue Lock season 1, it was announced that not only would the anime be receiving a second season, but that it would also receive a spinoff film, Blue Lock The Movie: Episode Nagi. Blue Lock is one of the biggest anime franchises in the world right now, so it makes sense that its studio would try to capitalize on that as much as quickly as possible.

The Best-Selling Manga Of 2023 Proves the Surprising New Genre Dominating Shonen

Blue Lock dominating this year’s best-selling manga is proof that sports manga isn’t just bigger than ever, it’s becoming shōnen’s crown jewel.

While there’s still no word about Blue Lock season 2’s release, the film has received a big update. During Crunchyroll’s presentation at CinemaCon 2024, it was announced that Blue Lock The Movie: Episode Nagi would officially be coming to theaters on June 28, 2024, only two months after its Japanese release.

Such a quick turnaround will do wonders to keep the anime’s momentum going, and if it follows a common pattern with anime movies, it could be the best installment of the anime, to date.

Blue Lock Blu-Ray Review: A Great Introduction To One Of The Most Successful Series In Recent Times

Blue Lock was one of the biggest anime to come out in 2022, and a year later, the first half of season 1 is finally out on Blu-ray and DVD.

Blue Lock The Movie: Episode Nagi’s Story Explained

As the title would imply, Blue Lock The Movie: Episode Nagi is a film that stars one of the major characters of the anime, Seishiro Nagi. Specifically, Blue Lock The Movie: Episode Nagi shows how Nagi and Reo became friends and partners in the world before soccer, eventually transitioning into showing the original story of Blue Lock from Nagi’s perspective. The original Episode Nagi manga also used that as a means of fleshing out other characters associated with Nagi like Reo and Zantetsu, so the film is bound to do just as good a job of it, if not better.

How Far Will Blue Lock The Movie: Episode Nagi Go?

Episode Nagi volume 1

With Blue Lock: Episode Nagi manga still ongoing, that begs the question of how much the film will cover. While the manga is currently covering what happened to Nagi after Isagi’s four-man team lost to Rin’s, considering how that’s about two years’ worth of content, that’s probably too much for a single film. As such, Blue Lock The Movie: Episode Nagi will probably go up to Nagi’s loss to Isagi in the first selection; none of the promotional material has shown anything past that point, so that gives extra credence to the idea of that being the stopping point.

Blue Lock’s New Film Can Fix The Anime’s Biggest Problem

The cast of Blue Lock

One of the biggest reasons to be excited about Blue Lock The Movie: Episode Nagi is to see how much it will improve the anime’s animation. As good as Blue Lock was, the animation often failed to sell the chaotic intensity of the story, especially when compared to the art of the manga, and many episodes were hard to watch as a result. Anime films typically have much better animation than their original anime, however, so Blue Lock The Movie: Episode Nagi could finally give Blue Lock standout art and animation, and that’s great for old and new fans, alike.

The idea of Blue Lock The Movie: Episode Nagi having an uptick in animation could also be good for season 2. If the movie is a success, then Studio 8bit might try and put a more conscious effort into maintaining its standard for the anime, so Blue Lock season 2 could have far more consistent and all-around better animation than season 1. All in all, there’s a lot to be excited about with Blue Lock’s first feature film, and fortunately, it won’t take much longer to see it all come together.
