It was first revealed in May 2023 that Scorsese had met with Pope Francis and was writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus. The movie is based on the 1973 novel, A Life of Jesus, by Shūsaku Endō, the same author who wrote the 1966 novel, Silence, which Scorsese adapted into his 2017 film of the same name. The director has said that his Jesus movie will be set during the present day, and he envisions it running around 80 minutes, exploring Jesus’ core teachings and principles in a way that doesn’t proselytize.

Since Andrew Garfield starred in Silence to much success, it makes sense that Scorsese would want to reunite with him for Life of Jesus, another adaptation of Endō. In Silence, Garfield played a 17th-century Jesuit priest who travels from Portugal to Japan to find his missing mentor, and his performance was widely acclaimed for his complex exploration of faith. In Life of Jesus, it’s unclear if Garfield would play the titular role or one of his disciples. Scholars believe Jesus died between the ages of 33 to 38, so Scorsese will likely cast an actor around that age.

Scorsese is also interested in casting Miles Teller in an undisclosed role.

Though the cast is still undetermined, shooting is set to start later this year in Israel and other locations. However, filming in Israel might present significant logistical challenges due to the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. That aside, since Scorsese is interested in reuniting with Garfield, audiences can expect Life of Jesus to be a deep exploration of faith similar to Silence.
