It will feature Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as the fourth-wall-breaking mercenary Wade Wilson, also known as Deadpool, teaming up for the second time with Hugh Jackman’s X-Men character James “Logan” Howlett, also known as Wolverine after first encountering him in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Ever since it was announced that Jackman had joined the Deadpool & Wolverine cast, speculation about the nature of Logan’s return has been rampant. The character hasn’t been seen onscreen since his canonical death in Logan, and the movie’s marketing campaign has even poked fun at this speculation by pretending to have Deadpool reveal the answer while being drowned out by a Wham! song. Jackman has offered a little more clarity, however, pointing out that the Marvel multiverse allows different versions of Wolverine to exist across different timelines.

Deadpool 3’s first trailer provides a first glimpse at Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. However, this MCU variant of the mutant seems slightly different.

Deadpool’s monologue in the new Deadpool & Wolverine teaser seems to confirm Jackman’s statement. In it, Deadpool is speaking as though he and Wolverine have already met, but he is talking about the events of the new movie as if they will be taking place in the far future. This seems to imply that Deadpool is speaking to Wolverine in the past at some point between X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the new MCU outing, though it does not clarify in which universe’s timeline this may be taking place.

Deadpool has already gained the ability to time travel, as revealed in the extended credits sequence of the 2018 sequel Deadpool 2. The montage, set to Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time,” saw the antihero tying up loose plot threads and pulling off a few additional meta jokes, including assassinating the real-life Ryan Reynolds before he could agree to star in the 2011 flop Green Lantern. This likely showcases the same method by which Logan will be brought into the timeline of Deadpool & Wolverine, whichever version of the iconic character he happens to be.
