Abigail star Melissa Barrera reveals whether a sequel is possible for the vampire horror-comedy. The movie, inspired by the story of the 1936 movie Dracula’s Daughter, has already grossed $15 million globally against a production budget of $28 million. Directed by Scream 6 duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and starring Barrera, the story follows a group of criminals who kidnap the daughter of an underworld kingpin, unaware she is a vampire until she breaks free and starts killing them off.

In an interview with IndieWire, Barrera claimed that Abigail could get a follow-up, assuming the movie is a financial success. Barrera talked about what she thought could happen in a sequel and how the storyline could follow her character Joey, as the sole survivor of the massacre, and her potential future as a vampire. “But she
does
get bit, so there is a possibility of, if the movie does well enough and they want to do a sequel, that there is a vampire Joey, if that happens. In my head, she gets home, she turns into a vampire, and then she starts hunting Abigail, ‘You lied to me. I helped you.’ That could be an interesting follow-up, and then they have to team up and defeat some other clan of vampires or something. That could definitely happen. I just want to wear the fangs and fly.”

Abigail‘s unexpected ending allows for a follow-up to happen quite easily, in a way that would be narratively pleasing. Barrera’s Joey was the soul survivor, having been let go by the murderous titular vampire after forming an uneasy alliance with her to stop Frank (Dan Stevens). There is also a major cameo ending with Watchmen star Matthew Goode appearing as Abigail’s father Kristof Lazar, which provides opportunities to explore this new Dracula-like character in detail in a follow-up film.

However, other factors will need to be considered, such as box office success. Abigail has great reviews already and a strong Rotten Tomatoes score of 83%. In terms of box office, the horror comedy had a promising start after opening to $10 million domestically. However, it is too close to call if the movie will achieve profitability, given the competition in the coming week, such as Zendaya’s Challengers.

With many studios struggling for financial success in today’s climate, any movie that performs well will be considered for a sequel, which is not always a good thing.
