Dune: Part Two’s box office weekend catapults the franchise past a box office milestone as the sequel closes in on impressive box office totals. Released on March 1, Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel has been met with universally positive reviews and financial success. Critics are calling the film a masterpiece and praising Dune: Part Two’s stellar cast, which features Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor-Joy, Christopher Walken, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, and Rebecca Ferguson.

As per Collider, Dune: Part Two’s earnings propel the series past another box office milestone. With the most recent totals, the Villeneuve Dune duology has now made over $1.1 billion at the global box office. Dune: Part Two brought in another $3 million domestically this weekend, bringing its total to $276 million at the domestic box office. Globally, Dune: Part Two has now brought in $695 million worldwide, edging it even closer to the $700 million mark worldwide.

Dune: Part Two’s Box Office Success Explained

With this total, Dune: Part Two is far and away the more financially successful film of Villeneuve’s Dune features. 2021’s Dune made $407.5 million at the worldwide box office, which is just over half of what Dune: Part Two has made thus far. Unlike the sequel, the first Dune film faced significantly more obstacles during its release. For one, its 2021 release date situated it still well within the COVID pandemic times wherein theater attendance was low. It was also released simultaneously on HBO Max (now Max), diminishing its theatrical interest.

Dune: Part Two has not been without setbacks either. The film was originally supposed to release back in the fall of 2023, before Warner Bros. ended up delaying the film until March 2024. The delay ended up working in its favor, as the building anticipation and less competitive March release schedule helped boost Dune: Part Two’s box office returns. At a $695 million gross, Dune: Part Two has now far exceeded its estimated break even point of $500 million.
