Hawkgirl actress Isabela Merced opens up about working with Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern and the other DC Universe superheroes in James Gunn’s Superman movie. With the DCEU movie timeline officially concluded, Warner Bros. Discovery is actively working on their new superhero universe in the form of the DC Universe from Gunn and Peter Safran. The first film that is currently in production from DC Studios is Superman, featuring David Corenswet as the new live-action Man of Steel.

However, Gunn’s Superman movie will feature several iconic DC heroes, including Hawkgirl, played by Merced. In a new interview with Screen Rant while promoting her new Max film Turtles All The Way Down, Merced was asked for an update on her Superman filming process. While she couldn’t give spoilers, Merced opened up on her excitement about working with Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific sharing the following:

Isabela Merced: Oh, well, I have to say your house reminds me of Nathan Fillion’s house, he has a Superman doormat, and he has a doorbell [that] actually plays the theme of Superman entering his Fortress of Solitude. It plays the theme when you walk into the house, and I’m really excited to work with him. He’s a great Green Lantern casting choice and Edi Gathegi is amazing, as well, as Mr. Terrific. We’re actually going this Sunday, I think, to film the first stuff. [Editor’s Note: this interview was conducted on Friday, April 5, two days before the Sunday that Merced was referencing]

Screen Rant: In the suit, I am hoping?

Isabela Merced: Yeah, yeah, of course!

David Corenswet has officially been cast as Clark Kent in the DCU’s Superman: Legacy, leading many to wonder about his career up to this point.

How Hawkgirl, Green Lantern & Mr. Terrific Fit Into James Gunn’s Superman Movie

The New DC Universe Has Multiple Superheroes Already Established In-Universe

While exact plot details haven’t been revealed yet, the Superman movie cast also includes Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, alongside Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific. It’s unclear if any other DC heroes will make their way into Gunn’s Superman movie, as there hasn’t been any new casting for other roles. Even though there has been concern that there are a lot of superheroes in what is meant to be Superman’s first DC Universe solo film, Gunn has made it clear that they are there in a supporting capacity.

One of the points that Gunn has been stressing about Superman is that this will introduce a DC Universe where superheroes are already established. That is why Clark Kent is already going to be operating as the Man of Tomorrow but during his early days. Having Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, Green Lantern, and Mister Terrific helps visualize the world of heroes existing around Superman already in Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters.” That is also why characters like The Engineer – played by Maria Gabriela De Faria – from The Authority will also show up, as this allows for a wider variety of DCU superheroes.

While Merced’s Hawkgirl costume hasn’t been revealed to the public yet, it’s possible that whenever they film more scenes on location, a few glimpses will finally emerge. With a lot of details still being kept under wraps, time will tell when Gunn will reveal more to the world about his Superman movie. But for now, the DC Universe audience will have to wait and see what else is in store with the Superman film.
