Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver director Zack Snyder explains why Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) betrays Kora (Sofia Boutella) in a flashback to the royal family’s assassination. The first movie, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, revealed that the tyrant Balisarius had orchestrated the murder of the royal family, so he could become in control of the imperialistic Motherworld. At the time, Kora was an Imperium soldier who failed to protect Princess Issa (Stella Grace Fitzgerald). However, the sequel shows exactly what happened during the assassination, including a surprising twist.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder explained why Balisarius betrayed Kora after the royal family’s assassination in Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. Despite thinking of Kora as a daughter, the director stated that Balisarius is willing to “sacrifice anything” when it comes to the Motherworld. He needed to rule the Motherworld, and Kora was in a position to take the fall instead of him. He values nothing. He sees the kings as rotatable, but the style and the heart of the Motherworld must continue, so he would sacrifice anything for it. Kora is also in the perfect position to take the fall for the whole thing. I don’t think he sees it as necessarily a betrayal, because they’re both soldiers, and the idea of sacrificing for the Motherworld is the thing that they’d both been taught from an early age. If he talked to her, he would say, ‘You were given this honor to sacrifice yourself for the royal family, to continue the line, and you selfishly ran.’ So that’s how he would probably take it.

Before The Scargiver, the details of the royal family’s assassination were a bit hazy. In the first movie, Kora simply tells Gunnar (Michiel Huisman) that Balisarius killed the family, and she failed in her role as a bodyguard to Princess Issa, who was prophesied to be the figure that could end the Motherworld’s conquest. There was an assumption that the assassination changed her mind about the Motherworld or that she left in disgrace due to failing her duties. However, the sequel drops the bombshell that she was actually involved in the assassination plot.

Kora confirmed the role she played in the royal family’s murder. Kora carried out the murder of Princess Issa, partaking in the assassination to prove her loyalty to Balisarius. After pulling the trigger, though, Balisarius frames her for the entire assassination, sending his men after her. Hence, she actually left the Motherworld because she was forced to run away or face punishment for the royal family’s deaths. The flashback makes the depths of Kora’s guilt more understandable, as she did something much worse than failing to protect a royal.

Despite the event, Titus (Djimon Hounsou) revealed to Kora that Princess Issa is still alive at the end of Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. It is unclear how she survived, but this additional turning point means the prophecy remains intact. Although Netflix has not greenlit another sequel, Snyder recently shared that the third movie will follow Kora and her team’s attempt to find the living royal.
