Less than two months after releasing in theaters, where it grossed a modest $8.6 million, Stewart’s Love Lies Bleeding is now available on VOD via Amazon Prime Video.
How Loves Lies Bleeding’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Compares To Other Recent Stewart Films
Love Lies Bleeding snagged Stewart some of the best reviews of her career, and the movie overall impressed critics, sending it to a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That number represents the best score of Stewart’s career when it comes to fiction films, with only the documentary Love, Antosha scoring higher.

When it comes to fiction films in which Stewart took on a starring role, Love Lies Bleeding beats out acclaimed titles like 2016’s Certain Women, 2014’s Clouds of Sils Maria, 2009’s Adventureland and 2014’s Still Alice. Stewart has indeed enjoyed a strong critical run in recent years, with Crimes of the Future, Spencer and Happiest Season topping 80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Her last critical flop was 2020’s action-thriller Underwater, which came as part of a run of critically-panned Stewart films including J.T. LeRoy, Seberg and Charlie’s Angels.
The critical love for Love Lies Bleeding unfortunately did not lead to a huge box office haul, as the film performed modestly in its short theatrical run. The movie is now available to watch on VOD, where it has another chance to snag the audience it deserves. Stewart fans can now check it out at home, as can fans of director Glass’ under-appreciated horror film Saint Maud.
What’s Next For Stewart After Love Lies Bleeding?
Stewart has become rather choosy in the roles she takes on, appearing in only one movie in 2022, none in 2023, and just one so far in 2024. But Stewart does have another film on the way, one that co-stars her with Oscar-nominee Steven Yeun. Described cryptically as “a love story between a satellite and a buoy,” Stewart and Yeun’s Love Me premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, but does not yet have an official release date.
In addition to the quirky Love Me, Stewart has lined up a role in Sacramento, a road trip comedy also starring Rosalind Chao, Maya Erskine, and Michael Cera. Listed on IMDb as being in pre-production, Stewart’s other reported upcoming project, Rosebushpruning, will team her with Josh O’Connor and Elle Fanning in a drama about a family struggling with a genetic illness. In addition to those acting roles, Stewart is also planning her feature film directorial debut with the long-gestating The Chronology of Water.
Love Lies Bleeding
is available to watch on Prime Video.
Stewart’s commitment to appearing in small, quirky films like Love Lies Bleeding, while branching out to directing her own movies, leaves her with few opportunities to appear in bigger-budget franchise films. Indeed, the actor/director seems uninterested in joining a big franchise like the MCU, saying recently to the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, “It sounds like a f-cking nightmare, actually.” But Stewart did open the door a little bit on becoming a superhero, adding, “If Greta Gerwig asked me to do a Marvel movie, then I would do it.”
