Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
may not seem too far behind the original movie, but now that it is four weeks into its domestic run, its sales are beginning to taper off as new releases pose as box office competition.

As Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hits another milestone, it has renewed interest in whether it will surpass 2014’s Godzilla at the domestic box office. So far, the new movie is the second highest-grossing domestic movie in the Monsterverse franchise. Initially, Kong: Skull Island held the second-place spot with $168 million domestically. However, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire box office hurtled past that milestone a week ago when it crossed $171.6 million. Since then, the new movie has accumulated another $5 million domestically, but it’s still lagging behind the first Monsterverse film.

Every Monsterverse Movie

Domestic Box Office

Global Box Office

Godzilla (2014)

$200,676,069

$529,076,069

Kong: Skull Island (2017)

$168,052,812

$568,652,812

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)

$110,500,138

$387,300,138

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)

$470,116,094

Godzilla x Kong: New Empire (2024)

$176,200,000 (estimated)

$504,000,000 (estimated)

Godzilla (2014) is the highest-grossing Monsterverse movie domestically, finishing with $200.7 million. Hence, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire still needs roughly $24 million to surpass the 2014 film. It wouldn’t be impossible for the movie to make this amount, but it seems highly unlikely. The first movie had a much better headstart than the new installment, as it debuted at $93.2 million as opposed to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire‘s $80 million debut. As a result, the 2014 entry took just three weeks to pass $170 million domestically, while the 2024 film took four weeks.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire may not seem too far behind the original movie, but now that it is four weeks into its domestic run, its sales are beginning to taper off as new releases pose as box office competition. However, even if it doesn’t surpass Godzilla (2014) domestically, it may still top its overall earnings. The 2014 movie ended with $529 million overall, which the new movie does have a shot at surpassing given its high performance internationally. While Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has just surpassed $500 million globally, there are still a few more milestones and Monsterverse records within reach.
