Sicario 3 gets a mixed new update, with Josh Brolin commenting on the status of the anticipated threequel. Released in 2015, Sicario is directed by Denis Villeneuve from a script by Taylor Sheridan, following FBI Agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) as she joins a government task force operating outside the law at the U.S./ Mexico border. The critically acclaimed film got a sequel in 2018 called Sicario: Day of the Soldado, and talk of a third film has persisted ever since, though one has yet to come to fruition.

In a recent interview with The Playlist, Brolin, who played CIA officer Matt Graver in both movies, shares a new update on the announced Sicario 3. According to the actor, the movie is “closer,” but Sheridan’s involvement is unclear and Christopher McQuarrie, best known for directing the three most recent Mission: Impossible movies, is no longer involved. Check out Brolin’s full comment below:

We are—we’re closer.
Yes. Molly Smith, who is a really good friend, who is one of the producers of that on Black Label—I said something. I said, ‘It’s never gonna happen!’ and it kind of went everywhere. And she was very reactive, which I appreciated. I appreciate reaction. They’re very much focused on wanting it to happen, but we won’t let it happen until there’s a story interesting enough to want to spend that kind of money on it.

“Chris [McQuarrie] was involved for a while, but he’s not now. And I don’t know about [Taylor] Sheridan. I know him really well, but I don’t know if he’s onboard or not.”

Sicario 3 Is The Perfect Movie For Denis Villeneuve To Make After His Next 2 Projects

Sicario solidified Villeneuve’s ability to direct smaller-scale movies compared to blockbusters like Dune. After Dune Part 2, he should do Sicario 3.

Sicario 3 Could Have Trouble Topping The First Movie

Day Of The Soldado Was Missing Some Key Ingredients

Even though Sheridan wrote Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the reviews for the sequel weren’t as glowing as those for the first film. Part of this could be because Villeneuve didn’t direct the movie, with filmmaker Stefano Sollima instead at the helm, but Blunt also didn’t return as Macer. The story pivots more to focus on Benicio Del Toro’s Alejandro and Brolin’s Graver, which, while interesting, ended up not being quite as powerful. The Sicario 2 ending does, however, clearly set up a third film.

With Villeneuve having suggested he won’t be returning for Sicario 3, the film already has a challenging hurdle to overcome. Reports have suggested, however, that the threequel would feature the return of Blunt, Del Toro, and Brolin, perhaps meaning it could recapture some of the magic of the first installment. Blunt, though, revealed earlier this year that she hasn’t heard anything concrete about Sicario 3, which casts doubts on these claims.

While Sicario 3 will have trouble meeting the same quality level of the first film, it could still be a success if it’s as good as Day of the Soldado. Even though the sequel didn’t hit the same highs as the original, it was still an effective thriller with a strong cast. It remains to be seen whether Sicario 3 ever actually happens, but Brolin’s latest update suggests the project is still inching forward.
